EDUCATION & TRAINING

The education and training opportunities available through Plaza Facial Surgery are some of the best in the country. Our doctors oversee the oral and maxillofacial residency and fellowship programs at Saint Luke's Hospital, and are committed to providing the highest quality training possible. The residency program offers two tracks, a four-year certificate program and a six-year certificate plus MD program, both of which are accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association. Residents rotate through UMKC School of Dentistry and Medicine, and Saint Luke's Hospital of Kansas City, giving them a well-rounded education that prepares them for a successful career in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

overview

The Residency and Fellowship Program is a comprehensive training program that covers all aspects of oral and maxillofacial surgery. Through this program, residents and fellows will acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to competently diagnose and surgically manage diseases of the oral cavity, head and neck, as well as perform trauma and post-traumatic reconstruction surgery. In addition, residents and fellows will also be trained in intravenous sedation and intubated general anesthesia, two important skills for oral and maxillofacial surgeons. The curriculum is constantly reviewed and updated to ensure that residents and fellows are receiving the most up-to-date education possible.

Objectives

Our goal is to produce state-of-the-art maxillofacial surgeons who are committed to continued scientific inquiry, intellectual growth, and excellence in patient care. As part of our community, we expect residents and fellows to share their education, training, and experience through participation in scientific meetings and publications. We take pride in our responsibility to prepare the next generation of maxillofacial surgeons who will make a difference in the lives of their patients.

At Plaza Facial Surgery, our doctors oversee the clinical experience for all residents and fellows, ensuring they get the best possible training. In total, 33 months are devoted to clinical oral and maxillofacial surgery, with a comprehensive curriculum that covers everything from weekly seminars to journal club reviews. Literature review is mandatory for all residents in order to keep up with the latest advances in the field.
